Portland, ME— On Thursday, April 14th, 2016 from 3-4pm Wright-Ryan Construction will celebrate Women in Construction at its 10 Danforth Street offices. Each year the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), whose mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry, celebrates Women in Construction (WIC) Week. WIC Week 2016 took place March 6-12. Wright-Ryan aligns its celebration this year to run concurrent with the closing of the 2016 Construction Showcase of Maine in Augusta, of which Wright-Ryan is a sponsor, the premier event of NAWIC Maine.
Today, Wright-Ryan Construction employs 68 employees, 13 are women in a wide variety of roles. This number, representing just over 19% of Wright-Ryan’s total workforce, far surpasses the national average. In a separate press release recently distributed by NAWIC for WIC Week 2016, Sandy Field, the Association’s immediate past-president shared, “While there are more than one million women employed in the construction industry, women only comprise approximately ten percent of the construction workforce. These women, whether they are administrative specialists, general contractors, subcontractors, trades people, or professionals, are vital elements to the construction process.”
The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry, to provide an occasion to raise awareness for the opportunities available to women in construction, and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.
